Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD, TMJ or TMJD),
is a term covering inflammation of the temporomandibular
joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. The
disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant
pain and impairment. Because the disorder transcends
the boundaries between several health-care disciplinesin
particular, dentistry, neurology, physical therapy and
psychologythere is a variety of quite different
treatment approaches.
Factors
Contributing factors include:
- Speech habits resulting in jaw thrusting.
- Excessive gum chewing or nail biting.
- Excessive jaw movements associated with exercise.
- Repetitive unconscious jaw movements associated
with teeth grinding.
- Size of foods eaten.
Treatment
- Oral Appliance to control grinding/clenching
- Eliminate oral habits
