Toronto Private Schools
Toronto is a diverse urban centre filled with choices and the range of private and independent schools operating in the city reflects this spirit. There are day schools and boarding schools; co-ed and single gender schools; private schools with less than 50 pupils and schools with more than 1,000 students.
There are about 215 private and independent schools instructing students in the city. Parents looking for an alternative to the public system have much to choose from in Toronto. There are Montessori schools, faith-based schools, schools that cater to children with special needs and schools with unique academic and instructional approaches. There are schools that are affiliated with universities, cultural or religious institutions. Many private elementary, middle as well as high schools can be found in Toronto’s neighbourhoods. Given the city’s extensive public transit system, many of Toronto’s private schools are easily accessed by bus and subway.
There has been a steady growth in private schools in Toronto over the last decade and these institutions have become commonplace within the city’s education landscape.
Private schools in Toronto, as well as across the province, must register annually with the Ontario Ministry of Education. The education ministry does not inspect or monitor the curriculum at private schools unless the institution is seeking approval to grant credits leading to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
