Toronto REALTOR®

A Toronto REALTOR® is a professional working in the field of real estate, and is also a member of the National Association of REALTORS® or an organization associated with it. Each letter in the term must appear capitalized. Coined in the United States by Charles N. Chadbourn back in 1916, it is a registered trademark that can only be used by its organization's members.

REALTORS® are responsible for the sale and purchase of Toronto real estate, with the small exception of those properties that are sold or purchased directly by the owner. However, “by the owner” transactions, performed without the assistance of a REALTOR®, in many cases cannot legally occur. Generally, they also take much longer to complete, are a hassle, and can be more expensive in the end. By choosing to cooperate with a REALTOR® in Toronto or anywhere else in Canada, guarantees a level of quality and service that is governed by the Canadian Real Estate Association's Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Practice.

Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Practice

The Canadian code, approved many years after the one outlined by the National Association of REALTORS® in 1913, preserves the moral integrity and professionalism of all REALTORS® associated with the Canadian Real Estate Association. As a result, buyers and sellers of Toronto real estate can expect a high code of conduct from their REALTOR® that was developed to obtain and maintain the satisfaction of their clients.

Since 1959, REALTORS® have been obligated to follow this code that includes such guidelines as those that govern their loyalty to their clients and advertising of the Toronto real estate they have been commissioned to sell or buy. An article of the code also prohibits a REALTOR® from discriminating against a client on the basis of race, sex, marital status or other such designation.

Consumers are further protected by The Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO).
