Wine Making
Few
things are more rewarding than the taste of your first
glass of homemade wine.
Wine making allows you to choose the fruit, equipment, and process to create a wine that is entirely to your personal taste. As a hobby, wine making can be time consuming. However, enjoying the fruits of one's own labour with others can be satisfying.
Wine making is simply the process of fermenting the juice of fruit. Throughout history, people have been cultivating and harvesting grapes for the purpose of wine making in several societies. Evidence shows wine making processes may have begun in 6000 B.C., existing as an important alcoholic beverage from ancient to modern times.
Though several countries in Europe are internationally renown for their wine making ability, such as France, Spain, and Italy, wine is produced and drunk throughout the world. However, there is just something about homemade wine that sets it apart from even the finest of vineyards and wineries (and it can be far cheaper per bottle, too!).
The key to good wine making, whether it be from a prepared kit or materials that you have pieced together yourself, is the sterility of the equipment. All utensils and containers must be absolutely clean and sterile. Equipment includes buckets, jugs, air locks, siphon tubes, and hydrometers. You will also need bottles and corks to store the wine once it has been made. This will prevent any foreign substances from contaminating your wine. Don't forget to wash your hand as well!
Fermentation is facilitated by the addition of yeast. There are a variety of strains of yeast, each developing the juice (and any additives) into a different type of wine. Usually, yeast for wine making is identified on the market by what kind of wine it creates. |
