Kites
Kites are objects that have been constructed to be easily lifted by the wind and remain suspended in the air. As kites need to be carried by the wind, they are made of materials that are light but strong and flexible, such as nylon stretched taut over a plastic frame.
Kites are believed to have originated in China about 3000 years ago, where they were constructed out of silk and bamboo. It is not known for what purpose kites were invented, however they have been used throughout history for a variety of reasons including military and competitive purposes.
Nowadays, flying and making kites are common hobbies.
Kite making can be solely for decorative reasons. However, enthusiasts often make kites and then fly them, therefore the type of kite made depends on the type of kite flying to be performed.
Military Kites
One of the most popular uses for kites is as a military device. In fact, the earliest documented evidence of kite use was to measure distance for the military, back in 200B.C.
Kite aerial photography, or KAP, is commonly used for military purposes. Normally, a small camera is attached to a single line kite that is flown over an area targeted to acquire a photographic record. Obviously, KAP is not restricted to military use. It is also used by photographers.
Competitive Kites
Kites are often made for competitions that feature fighting and the performance of tricks.
Kite fighting involves two or more flying kites that must destroy or ground their opponents from in the air. The lines of these kites used for this type of competition are sometimes coated with bits glass so that they can induce damage more easily.
Stunt, sport, or acrobatic kites are used to perform tricks. A stunt kite is normally triangular, and controlled by two or more lines that are attached to a handle. Tricks can be performed alone or with several others. |
