Word Games
Word games challenge one's comprehension of a language. Abilities in vocabulary, spelling, and semantics are tested. Many are considered to hold educational value, particularly for students at the elementary and secondary school level. As a result, word games aren't just for fun; they also help you learn!
A spelling game concentrates on the participants ability to spell. In many languages, this may sound like an easy game to play since words can be spelled out phonetically. However, in the English language, it proves difficult on many occasions. Spelling can be quite confusing at times, as the construction of words often rely on their origins or even the region in which the word game is played. For example, North America uses “program” while British English uses “programme”.
The most popular of this type of word game is a spelling bee. The goal is to spell the most presented words correctly, according to an agreed upon dictionary, thereby beating the opponents. Spelling bees have become so popular that there are several national and international competitions, at amateur and professional levels.
The crossword puzzle is another word game so popular and common that a different one can be found daily in hundreds of newspapers and magazines throughout the world. Crossword puzzles use hints that the participant must use to figure out the appropriate word or phrase to insert in a grid in specified directions (normally horizontally or vertically). The hints can be in the form of a question, synonym, or insinuation. Sometimes, these hints are specific to the culture, society or subject they cater to, making it difficult for outsiders to figure out.
