Video Games

Video games are any games that are played on a computer with a display such as a monitor or television. Most video games are played with a joystick, keyboard, or some type of control pad to communicate with the computer.
The first video game was tic-tac-toe (officially called “Noughts and Crosses” as it originated in England), developed in 1952. The first console for home use was Magnavox Odyssey, developed in 1972. It featured the hit video game Pong, based on ping pong. Technology has come a long way since then.
Nowadays, there are several types of video games available, as well as several types of hardware for video games. Hardware is generally manufactured as home computers, consoles, and more compact consoles that are hand held.
Some of the most popular video games are role playing games (RPG), shoot 'em ups, real time strategy (RTS) and sports games. Puzzle games are also popular. Often, preference is influenced by gender and the country in which the video game player lives. For example, many people enjoy role playing games in Japan, while North Americans tend to prefer shoot 'em ups and sports games.
Leading manufacturers of video games and video game consoles in countries such as Japan, the USA, and China participate in a multi million dollar industry. The industry is intensely competitive. If companies want their products to dominate the market, they must constantly upgrade their products to accommodate continuous advancement in technological development and to meet high consumer expectations.
