Emissions Testing
Car emissions testing is mandatory in many provinces and states throughout the US and Canada. Although it may not be mandatory throughout North America, chances are it will be in the future as environmental concerns become a priority. If your car does not pass emissions testing, it can be designated unfit to drive. Therefore, it is best that your car be maintained well enough to pass. Maintaining your car will also prolong its life.
Some key points to remember when preparing your car for emissions testing are the following:
Fill up on premium gas, unless the manual for your car otherwise states. This will reduce emissions, burning more cleanly.
Listen to the engine when your car is running. If it sounds like there's a problem there usually is. Since the inspector will also be checking your car's engine, get the problem fixed before the test.
Change the oil in your car. This will prevent dirty oil fumes from being expelled out of the tailpipe.
Tune up your car and replace the air filter or spark plugs.
Right before emissions testing, run the car to warm it up. This will warm up the catalytic converter, which is part of any car with an internal combustion engine. When the catalytic converter is hot, it can efficiently reduce the toxic emissions of your car. Taking your car out for a spin is also recommended to clean out spark plugs.
